Is a permit needed for skip bins in Mordialloc?

Mordialloc is governed locally by the City of Kingston. This council only requires permits for skip bins that are sited on public land, so if you’re able to make room within the boundary of your property to locate the skip bin, you won’t need a permit.

If your skip bin needs to be placed on public land, it’s a very different matter. The council has strict conditions in this case, and not only will you need a permit, but you’ll also need to satisfy certain safety and insurance criteria before the permit will be issued.

These rules include items contained in the Vic Roads Guidelines, plus some additional rules added by the council that go beyond the basic guidelines that apply generally across the state of Victoria.

The rules are generally concerned with ensuring the safety of the public, reducing inconvenience to the public, and avoiding damage to council infrastructure. It’s mostly a matter of common sense, and most people will not experience difficulty in getting a permit if they should need one. You can always rely on Jim’s for additional help if it is necessary.

To skip or not to skip?

People are sometimes surprised to learn that not everything can be disposed of in a skip bin. More importantly, it’s important to be aware that the local council puts the responsibility on you to ensure the skip bin does not contain any prohibited items. This is yet another reason why it’s a very good idea to make your best effort to site the bin entirely within the bounds of your own property, because then not only do you save money and complications, but it’s also less likely that random members of the pubic will be tempted to dispose of things in your bin. That can happen sometimes, so it’s important to be aware of it.

If you do get caught disposing of prohibited items in your skip bin, you could be fined for the transgression.

Things you’re not allowed to dispose of in skip bins include:

• Plasterboard
• Tyres
• Batteries
• Paint
• Solvent
• Chemicals
• Fuel
• Oil
• Medical waste
• Electrical appliances
• Weapons (guns, knives, swords, ammunition, explosives, etc)

As you can see, some items are really obvious, and some are less obvious. This is not necessarily a complete list of items, as the rules are subject to change.
