Keilor is one of those complicated Melbourne suburbs where the local government is divided between two different city councils, and the exact rules that apply could be wildly different depending on which side of the street you are on.
Jim’s is here to help, and we will help you as much as we are able. Exactly what must be done depends on which council we’ll be dealing with. It will be either the City of Brimbank (highly restrictive) or the City of Hume (much more open).
The Brimbank City Council does not allow skip bin placement on public land at all. You won’t need a permit in some cases, but if your site could be classed as a construction site or demolition site, and the cost of works to be carried out on the site is $20,000 or more, then you will need an Asset Protection Permit. You must be very careful in the part of Keilor governed by this council, because if any part of your skip bin strays onto public land, you could be fined up to $1000 per day.
If you are governed by the Hume City Council, the situation is a lot better. This council does allow for permits on public land, and doesn’t stick its nose into your business when you’re able to contain your skip bin entirely on your own private land.
The fee for an ordinary residence is $50, but construction sites also need an Asset Protection Permit. Once a permit is issued, you’ll need to comply with all sorts of rules and regulations.
This is why if you can possibly make enough room on your property for the skip bin to be cited there, it will make everything much simpler for you.
Once you have the skip bin on your property, it’s important to make sure it’s used correctly. Some items aren’t allowed to be disposed of in skip bins.
The list of items includes obvious things like asbestos, chemicals, and weapons, but also less obvious things such as plasterboard, electronic appliances, and batteries.
You can call us on 131-546 for advice if you’re unsure about anything that you intend to dispose of. We can also help if you need to dispose of items that are not allowed to be disposed of in a skip bin. Simply call us and we’ll do what we can to ensure you don’t encounter any problems.
