IS A PERMIT NEEDED FOR SKIP BINS IN MORPHETT VALE?
Morphett Vale is governed locally by the City of Onkaparinga. This council has strict requirements when you need to locate a skip bin on public land, so if you are at all able to arrange things so the skip bin can be sited entirely within the boundary of your own property it will be a big advantage.
Unlike many other local government councils in Australia, this one does not permit positioning of a skip bin on a public road, so the only option if you don’t have room within your property boundary is to locate it on the road verge (or “nature strip”). If you don’t have such a space in front of your house, you’ll need to find somebody to agree to let you park it on their road verge.
The rules are among the strictest we’ve seen anywhere. You can only place the skip bin on the site for a maximum of 3 days. This is a huge disadvantage compared to if the bin is on your own land, where you can keep it there as long as you like.
You also (and this is most unusual) must submit the application a full two weeks before the permit is to be issued. The fee of $87 for permit of 1 to 3 days is non-refundable. Even if you think you’ll only need the skip bin for one day, it’s probably best to request a 3 day permit anyway, since the cost is the same.
Along with the application form and the fee, you’ll also need to provide a detailed map indicating the exact location of the bin, and evidence of public liability insurance for at least $10 million (not a problem when you hire from Jim’s).
The chance of approval being granted diminishes with each or any of the conditions such as if the property is located on a bus route, if it is located on a hill, it is located on a road bend, and if there are parking restrictions in front of the property (this is the strangest condition, since the bin is not allowed on the road anyway).
If your property happens to be on a bus route on a hill where the road bends around and there are parking restrictions in front of the property, that could be a bit of a problem.
