Are permits needed for skip bins in South Melbourne?

Many streets of South Melbourne have additional complexity due to a number of factors including:

  • Limited yard and driveway space due to being older style high density town houses
  • Sharing road space with tram lines
  • Above average numbers of public buildings for a Melbourne suburb, especially when it comes to schools
  • High traffic density and limited parking space

All of these factors mean it can be more difficult to get a permit for a skip bin than in many other areas of Melbourne, so if it is possible to locate the skip bin within the boundary of your own private property, that is the best strategy.

There are many parts of South Melbourne where that’s just not possible, so applying for a permit is then necessary. Don’t worry because we can help with this process, provided that we have some advance notice so we can make the arrangements for you.

With our help, it will be much easier to get a skip bin permit, because we have excellent familiarity with the regulations and requirements, we are very experienced in dealing with local councils, and we have more than adequate public liability insurance to satisfy the council’s insurance requirements.

Using skip bins responsibly

When you have a lot of things to dispose of, skip bins are very convenient, but it is well to know that there are some things you are not allowed to dispose of in a skip bin. If you dispose of things that are not allowed to be disposed of in this way, you could be facing some very hefty fines. Nobody wants that to happen, so please check this list of things that are definitely not allowed to be disposed of in a skip bin before you throw out anything you’re not sure about:

  • Batteries of any kind. Many people think it is only car batteries, but in fact no batteries of any kind are allowed to be disposed of in skip bins (or in your normal household bins either). You need to take them to battery collection points or recycling facilities.
  • Chemicals. Many chemicals can be dangerous and also can create pollution, so there are strict rules governing their disposal. Tiny amounts of chemical residue remaining in plastic bottles after use are not really a problem, but if you have anything more than that, you definitely can’t throw it away in a skip bin or in your normal household waste.
  • Weapons, explosives, firearms, and ammunition. These items are restricted by law and require permits for owning, storing, using and moving. Even if you have a permit to own these things, you can’t just throw them in the bin. There is a process that must be followed.
  • Medical and biological waste. These could pose a health risk to the community, so they are things that need to be disposed in a proscribed manner.
  • Flammable liquids and volatile solids. Getting rid of these in a bin would be a fire risk to the community and also could result in pollution. These need to be taken to a proper disposal facility.
  • Toxic, reactive or radioactive metals such as zinc, cadmium, lead, mercury, uranium, etc. The reasons here are quite obvious.
  • Fluorescent tubes. If they break, they release toxic mercury and sometimes other substances. They can only be disposed of by taking them to collection points or recycling facilities.
  • Plasterboard. One of the more surprising items on the list that people sometimes get into trouble for. Plasterboard has to be recycled and can’t be disposed of in a bin.
  • Asbestos. You don’t want to be getting anywhere near asbestos if you can help it, and it goes without saying that if you dispose of it in a skip bin and it gets carted all through the town to a landfill site, you would be in a lot of trouble.

If you need to dispose of things that are on the list of prohibited items, Jim’s is here to help. We can either help to arrange for separate disposal of these items, or we can provide a referral to the relevant authorities to dispose of them for you. Call us on 131-546 for more information.
