Is a permit needed for skip bins in Kareela?
Kareela is governed locally by the Sutherland Shire Council. This council has a simple policy regarding skip bins, and they’re quite easy to deal with. In fact, you may not need to contact the council at all.
If your skip bin will be located entirely on privately owned land, no permit is required, and there is no time limit applying to how long you can store a skip bin on private land.
When there is no room on your own land for the skip bin to be placed, you may need to locate it on public land, which may be the road verge (“nature strip”) or even the roadway.
In this case, you will need to get approval from the council before you place your skip bin on public land. The approval takes into account factors such as whether the skip bin will be an obstruction to motorists or pedestrians, whether the skip bin will cause damage to or interfere with the surrounding public infrastructure, and whether the skip bin may obstruct a motorist’s line of sight. Once the approval is granted, a permit for 2 days, 5 days or 10 days may be issued (a small fee applies to each).
Obviously, it is best if you can find a way to make sure your skip bin will fit entirely on your own land because this way you save money and effort.
How to get a skip bin
The easiest way is simply to call 131-546 and request for one to be delivered. You can choose from three different sizes, and we’ll let you know the costs that apply to each one and any other services that you can hire additionally.
Because skip bins are always in high demand, it’s best to reserve your skip bin ahead of time, to make sure you don’t miss out.
Using your skip bin
Skip bins are designed for waste removal. They are a convenient and simple way to handle the bulk disposal of waste. However, there are some items you should not place in a skip bin. In general, anything that can be classified as hazardous waste (flammables, explosives, toxic substances, medicines, drugs, medical waste, biological waste, etc.) should not be disposed of in a skip bin or any other kind of household bin. These restricted items need to be disposed of in accordance with strict environmental protection and safety laws.
If you need to dispose of restricted items that would be classified as hazardous waste, contact us on 131-546 for advice.
Avoid burning anything in your skip bin, because this is dangerous, illegal, and will also damage the bin. It is also strongly advised not to climb on or get in the bin, as you could injure yourself if you do.
Skip bins are wonderfully convenient and simple to use, and when used responsibly they do a great job of helping you clean up your site.
